Tetris Didn't Triumph at The Game Awards — A New Category Might Solve This

As any prominent prize-giving event nears, one notices an outcry to include fresh award types to recognize unsung work and delight the hearts of enthusiasts who have specialized interests.

Another commentator previously argued advocating for terror-themed awards. It would be amazing. Equally deserving are board games, this being a dedicated supporter's campaign. But they will have to forgive me for pushing forward because like all blinkered fanatics, there's a strong justification supporting my request is the most urgent and significant. Here's the proposal: We need a classification for brain-teasing titles.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Organizing artistic expressions defies precise measurement; it remains highly personal, and typically start arguments concluding with vague boundaries. This explains why movie academies don’t do it. However, it represents an essential concession within the realm of interactive entertainment, which are so diverse it's challenging to consider them a single creative category.

To recognize the complete range of interactive entertainment excellence to receive acknowledgment, and to ensure all game types to compete fairly, specific award classifications remain vital.

Current Gaming Award Categories

The major gaming awards currently feature genre categories for Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Together, these award types effectively encompass a lot of ground, making space possible accommodating various experiences.

Different situation exists for puzzle games. There’s simply nowhere to put them. Examine these examples from outstanding current releases, all very different: the architectural riddles of one title, intense tile-matching in a different title, engaging interpersonal challenges from additional release. What category would fit them among existing types? Simply put, no category fits.

Acknowledgment Issues

There are dozens outstanding logic titles released every year that have no home in entertainment awards, except when they manage to fit award groups including Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, or the extremely competitive small studio competitions.

  • A renowned logic title got overlooked for anything in 2014
  • Another creative title missed out that year
  • A beloved organization game was overlooked recently
  • Limited numbers of puzzle games barely qualified for independent or mobile categories

Value of Brain-Teasers

These are often small games, however the design behind logic titles is of massive significance. Well-known matching games count as most engaged experiences in the world continuing this trend for an extended period.

The iconic tile-matching title challenges famous sandbox experiences for the title of best-selling game of all time; it also contends for top gaming experience. Puzzle games are foundational for gaming as medium, and engaging with almost every other genre.

The Solution and Justification

Logic titles wouldn't face this problem. One could readily select multiple candidates engaging, different, qualified experiences each ceremony simply — or rather, with difficulty, since numerous excellent many worthy titles.

To emphasize again, these are games lacking appropriate categories during prominent ceremonies. Logic title developers are working at the hard edge of video game design, producing among the purest expressions of the video game form. Similar to film action specialists, they deserve recognition. Don't make them wait 35 years.
