The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the United States against five European individuals involved in fighting digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.
European Leaders Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe including Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the visa restrictions targeted individuals who have been at the heart of efforts to enact legislation regulating American tech companies.
“For too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce American platforms to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in condemning the move.
The restrictions were imposed this week on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several activists fighting false information, including Germany and the United Kingdom.
An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance
This European legislation is seen by US officials as a form of censorship, while European leaders argue the rules are necessary to control hate speech and falsehoods.
This disagreement threatens to become a facet of a far wider existing political and ideological clash between Washington and Europe.
